HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT


The need for a National Health information system that will supply accurate Health demographic data for the planning, administration, monitoring and evaluation of Health services, both local and national levels has been highlighted in the National Health Policy and Strategy oL1988. Health services planning and administration law suffered serious set back in the country owning to lack of adequate data. There is therefore, the need for trained personnel that will assist the organisation of Medical Records services at all levels of health care deliveries.


The success of the national information system depends to a large extent on the ability to collect adequate and reliable data at the local government level, which are organised and forward to the state and Federal level. There had brought about the need to a middle level manpower to function at the Local Government Levels. The name of programme was changed to Him in February 2005.


Course Objectives

The objectives of the programme are to produce a cadre of manpower that will among others perform the following functions at the Local Government Level for the successful implementation of the Primary Health Care Services.
a. Organise and manage health information services in health care delivery system.
b. Organise and control health records.
c. Co-ordinate the collection, storage retrieval and insurance of health data.
d. Organise the preservation of health records.
e. Formulate, collate analyse, present and interprets health statistical data.
f. Plan a health records Departments effective patient flow.
g. Plan and manage a surveillance system for specified conditions.
h. Plan and manage on monitoring and evaluation (M and E) unit.
i. Participate in the conduct of research in health care system.
j. Standardize health records forms, designs and control.
k. Apply computer system to health care formation.
l. Advise on confidentiality, release of information from and preservation of records.

Prospect for Developments

Qualified candidates with good passes at the National Certificate in health records and on possession of at least five Credit passes at the Senior Secondary School (SSCE) or equivalent can be admitted (Direct) to Part 1 of the Higher National Diploma in Health Records. This programme are being run in schools for health information management situated in U. C. H. lbadan, O.A.U. T. H.C. lle lfe, L.U.T.H. Lagos, University Teaching Hospital, llorin e.t.c. The master programme in Health Information Management is being offered by University of lbadan, while the Bachelors programme is being considered by UNILORIN and B.sc is being offered by Lead City University Ibadan


Admission Requirement

5 Credits credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry or Physics and any other subject at not more than two sittings.
Duration: 3 years (Six Semesters)
